Deficiencies Nursing Homes Should Avoid From Coronavirus Infection Control Issues.

2020 has brought with it an unprecedented global pandemic, the Coronavirus (COVID19). What does this mean for Nursing Home facilities across the world? One thing that we know, is that we must increase our infection control practices in order to battle this unfortunate epidemic.

According to CMS, about 75% of all U.S. nursing homes had at least one infection-control related deficiency.

With the Coronavirus pandemic, infection control deficiencies are expected to escalate this year.

What is your plan to avoid these deficiencies?

To help you formulate a plan, here are a few Infection control F-TAGS that could result from the Coronavirus.

  • F-550: The facility can be cited under residents right for social isolation if a resident who tested positive feels that the staff or other residents are isolating them because of the positive test for #COVID19. Make sure that your staff is educated on the possible stigma attached to #COVID19 and ways to avoid it (follow Abuse Protocol for guidance). Treat all residents the same. Do not discriminate against the residents with positive COVID-19 tests. Do not discuss the resident with other staff, residents, and/or visitors.

  • F-603: This tag can be issued for involuntary seclusion if a resident who tests negative for COVID19 (and has no reason to be a person under investigation (PUI)), is placed on isolation. It may be a precautionary measure, but make sure that you have good documentation to substantiate your decision.
